Choosing the Right Quilt for Your Home

A handmade quilt isn't just bedding. It's the thing people notice when they walk into the room. Whether you're decorating a country cottage somewhere in the English countryside, a Victorian terrace in Bath, or a modern flat where everything is grey and geometric (we don't judge), the right quilt can completely change a space. Here's how to choose one, wherever you are in the United Kingdom or beyond.

Size Matters

In the UK, standard bed sizes differ slightly from those in the United States or Europe. A British double is 135 cm wide, while an American full is around 137 cm. Close enough, but worth checking if you're ordering from overseas. Most of Lynne's handmade quilts are generous in size, designed to drape beautifully over the sides of the bed rather than sitting flat on top like a tablecloth.

Think about how you'll actually use it. A full bed quilt makes a bold centrepiece. A smaller throw works beautifully folded at the foot of the bed or draped over a sofa (where it will inevitably be stolen by whoever gets to it first). Bed runners, the narrow quilts that sit across the width of the bed, add a touch of handcrafted luxury without overwhelming the room.

Colour and Pattern

British interior style tends towards muted, warm tones. Soft creams, dusky blues, sage greens, earthy terracotta. A handmade patchwork quilt brings texture and depth to these palettes. The beauty of patchwork is in the interplay of fabrics: florals against geometrics, plains against prints, colours you wouldn't think work together until suddenly they do.

Don't try to match your quilt exactly to your décor. A handmade quilt should be the focal point, not an afterthought. Choose one that speaks to you first, then let the room catch up.

Bedroom or Living Room?

Quilts aren't just for beds. In English country homes, patchwork throws have been draped over armchairs and sofas for generations. A quilt folded over the back of a sofa adds instant warmth and character. Some people frame smaller pieces as wall hangings, which is a tradition that's been quietly growing across Great Britain.

Wherever you display it, keep it away from direct sunlight to preserve the fabric colours. British weather actually helps here. Our gentle, overcast light is much kinder to textiles than harsh sun. Silver linings and all that.

Shipping and Delivery

Every quilt is carefully wrapped and dispatched from Somerset, England. Delivery is free anywhere in the United Kingdom. We also ship to Europe (£12.95) and worldwide (£25.00), so whether you're in Edinburgh, Dublin, New York, or Sydney, a piece of English craftsmanship can find its way to your door.

Each quilt is a one-of-a-kind piece. Once it's sold, it's gone forever. If one catches your eye, don't sit on it too long. Well, not metaphorically anyway. You're very welcome to literally sit on it.
